In this edition of *Meet @ Black Oak*, we're featuring Dharma Realm Buddhist University, a liberal arts college in the Buddhist tradition located on the east side of Ukiah. The accredited university offers a four-year BA program in Liberal Arts and a two-year MA program in Buddhist Classics. DRBU is a vegetarian and residential campus, located on the serene grounds of the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas. While the university's education is centered around discussion, the conversation often carries outside the classroom to Black Oak. Students and staff love to meet there to chat about big ideas, do homework, and socialize. Each year, new students are welcomed to Black Oak as they spend time with fellow students and professors over a cup of coffee. So many DRBU students and staff love Black Oak that it is affectionately known as DRBU "West." Black Oak Coffee, along with the Society of Children’s book Writers and Illustrators, are co-hosting a series of Craft-Ins at the cafe to celebrate National Novel Writers Month. Held on this coming Sunday Nov 4th and Sunday the 11th from 2:00 - 4:00 PM, you’ll have the opportunity to work on your project side by side with other writers and illustrators in a creatively supportive environment. Introducing our newest single origin coffee, and one half of this month's Black Oak Tasting Club offering: The award-winning Ethiopia Chelechele. Natural processed and dried on raised beds, the sweet, lively Ethiopia Chelchele comes from the METAD coop, a collective of local farmers — a majority of them women — with a coffee-producing history stretching back nearly 80 years. METAD has made significant investments in the coop and the surrounding communities, supporting local infrastructure development and even building Africa’s only internationally certified coffee quality control lab. The bright start to this cup quickly gives way to unmistakably natural Ethiopian flavors of dried strawberry, and blueberry. Those fruit flavors fade into a milk chocolate that lingers into the finish alongside the subtle floral notes that are so unique to heirloom Ethiopian varieties. This Friday, November 2nd at 12:00 PM, our very own coffee expert Tom Chandler will be hosting another tasting event in the cafe. This time he'll be covering not one but TWO coffees: the Ethiopia Chelchele and the Snow Day seasonal blend. Don't miss this opportunity to taste some amazing coffees and learn about their origin, roasting profiles, and complimentary brewing methods.
In this edition of *Meet @ Black Oak*, we're featuring the Caring Kitchen Project, an organization working through North Coast Opportunities in Ukiah. The project's purpose is to get teens (and adults) into the kitchen, cooking food for cancer patients via the Cancer Resource Center. They partner with many local food producers including Parducci Wineries organic garden, school gardens, community gardens, Mariposa Market, and the Mendo Lake Food Hub (among others) to source food used for the project. They also spend time going to classrooms and events to connect with students, as well as utilizing social media and local conferences to recruit adult participation. They meet at Black Oak for change of scenery, but it's also helpful seeing other community members (potential donors, kids, supporters) who they might not see otherwise. They also experience fewer work interruptions and feel less pressure when meeting outside the office. And of course, the yummy coffee drinks. Tarney's favorite drink is the Lover's Lane Latte, Teal loves the Cafe Borgia, and April's favorite is the Chai Latte.
